- You absolutely do NOT have to be in DC to bid on a government contract, although of course some contracts have to be performed here. So, if you are going to bid on providing computer support to an agency in DC or janitorial services in a Washington area building, you'd better be here to do it. But if you are selling a product, you do not have to be local, and even if you are selling a service, there are plenty of governmental offices outside of the DC area. Your first step, however, is probably to visit the local office of the Small Business Administrtion. Again, they have regional offices all over. You can find the one nearest you at this URL: http://www.sba.gov/localresources/index.html If none of those are near you--which would be hard to imagine, because there are so many--call 1-800-U-ASK-SBA (1-800-827-5722), which is a hotline for small business questions. My own experience with government hotlines, however, is that it is often difficult to tunnel down to the right person, and you wind up getting information that is too general unless you are very persistent. So, start local if you can. Once you get through to SBA, they have specific programs to help small businesses qualify for bidding on government contracts. Another Web site you might want to look at is http://www.fedbizopps.gov/, which will give you more info on the bidding process, and how to do it online. Dealing with the government is not terribly easy, but it can be done. Small businesses are winning government contracts every day. Good luck!!
